Miscellaneous Malark
There is still a mountain of Rockwool to climb after we took delivery of another 36 packs, and 50 sheets of plasterboard... and 6 steel doors. In between all this there has been a couple other miscellaneous jobs that needed taking care of. Firstly we needed to create a means of feeding our cables from the live room to the control room, in such a way that facilitates the future need of adding more. So we fixed a drainpipe behind the walls that will protrude through the plast

Insulation is Sweaty Work
Mineral wool has been the bane of our lives this past week. It's horrid stuff, and it's the only material I hate more than cling film. However it's a necessary evil in the construction of our recording studio as it is a large portion of how we are achieving acoustic isolation from the outside world. So it's on with the hazmat suits and face masks as we grin and bear probably the most uncomfortable and irritating part of this project! There are various different insulation

Studwork Finished!
We are approaching the half-way point of the studio build. The project has come along way and there is still a mile to go. Momentum is building and we are so pleased with the work done so far. We have reached a milestone and the main timber structures that create the control room and live room are complete. Each timber frame was constructed on the floor and erected into place, with over 1000 screws holding the whole thing together! Our design incorporates 3 different ceilin

Control Room Taking Shape
We are somewhat restricted with the dimensions of the space the studio resides, but we have done our best to design the rooms so that we can optimise their acoustic response. Every room responds uniquely to sound, and when it comes to recording studios it's quite important. The very fact that there are walls for sound waves to interact with means that it will colour or distort the sound we hear from the studio speakers. The aim with studio design is to minimise the negative

Sub-Floor Complete!
So we have finally finished the sub-floor for the whole studio! It's slowly beginning to take shape. The industrial unit is only about 850sqft so we designed the studio to have a large control room to give artists a space to chill out. There isn't nearly enough space to build another room for a dedicated communal area, so we built in a higher level at the back of the control room in order to separate the work space from the hospitality area. We'll place some sofas or beanbags

Water In, Water Out
So after deciding to pass on installing a toilet, we thought we'd at least install a kitchen... Or at the very least prepare to install a kitchen. Remember when we toiled with the idea of installing a toilet? Well we scrapped the idea since there was a communal toilet right next to our unit, and it would have cost loads to install our own into the current waste system. Instead the studio will eventually have a small kitchen in the isolation corridor. However, we don't w

Scrap Metal
A hurdle we knew we would have to face eventually has temporarily halted the work on the studio sub-floor. What can only be described as a large metal table is getting in the way of our timber work and needs to be chopped down. We are cutting the table at the bottom of the cylinder so we can put our sub-floor joist-work over the top of it. The metal is almost an inch thick around the perimeter of the cylinder and it took nearly an hour with an angle grinder to get through.

Sub-Floor Construction
This week deliveries from 3 different suppliers came with the rest of the materials for the studio floor. Remember, we can't build directly onto the concrete so there is loads of work to do building in a sub-floor. We're squashed for workspace so we're prioritising the construction of the live room floor first, when that's done we can use that floor for extra workspace. The materials we are using: 4x2 Timber carcassing Adhesive high-density foam rubber isolation tape Fo

Let's Begin The Build
After quotes, consultancy, research, prep-work, designs, re-designs, revisions of re-designs, and more quotes, we're finally ready to start building! The first order of wood was made last week and we finally got down-and-dirty with the building work. First on the list is to construct a timber subfloor that raises the studio floor off the concrete floor. The two main reasons for doing this is that the concrete floor is very uneven meaning that laying the studio floor directl

Working the Drains
So all the contractors have been working their quotes and sending them in, as we anticipated we have needed to make drastic changes to the studio designs to make the project work. Firstly, the water drains have been diverted out of the premises, which is good news as it means the risk of flooding has been practically eliminated (or significantly reduced). The builders have taken care not to protrude from the ceiling too which is good news, as it won't affect our studio build
