Studio Windows
The majority of the dusty work is done, so we've been working hard on the window between the control room and live room, or is that windows...? The studio walls and doors are complete and we had to make sure the the specification of the window was going to maintain the integrity of the acoustic system . Firstly the two rooms are almost entirely independent from each other, separated walls built on separated sub-floors; in trying to keep that separation each room has it's ow

Putting On The Walls
So we are at a point with the studio build where multiple jobs are are running concurrently. The Rockwool is still going in, the electrical work has come leaps and bounds, the CCTV system is being installed, and the plasterboard is making its way on to the walls. The plasterboard is so large (1.2 x 2.4 metres) and so heavy (30kg per sheet) it's really easy to snap under its own weight. Panelling any of the ceiling needs at least two people. Chris has made really quick and

Insulation is Sweaty Work
Mineral wool has been the bane of our lives this past week. It's horrid stuff, and it's the only material I hate more than cling film. However it's a necessary evil in the construction of our recording studio as it is a large portion of how we are achieving acoustic isolation from the outside world. So it's on with the hazmat suits and face masks as we grin and bear probably the most uncomfortable and irritating part of this project! There are various different insulation

Studwork Finished!
We are approaching the half-way point of the studio build. The project has come along way and there is still a mile to go. Momentum is building and we are so pleased with the work done so far. We have reached a milestone and the main timber structures that create the control room and live room are complete. Each timber frame was constructed on the floor and erected into place, with over 1000 screws holding the whole thing together! Our design incorporates 3 different ceilin

Sub-Floor Construction
This week deliveries from 3 different suppliers came with the rest of the materials for the studio floor. Remember, we can't build directly onto the concrete so there is loads of work to do building in a sub-floor. We're squashed for workspace so we're prioritising the construction of the live room floor first, when that's done we can use that floor for extra workspace. The materials we are using: 4x2 Timber carcassing Adhesive high-density foam rubber isolation tape Fo

Let's Begin The Build
After quotes, consultancy, research, prep-work, designs, re-designs, revisions of re-designs, and more quotes, we're finally ready to start building! The first order of wood was made last week and we finally got down-and-dirty with the building work. First on the list is to construct a timber subfloor that raises the studio floor off the concrete floor. The two main reasons for doing this is that the concrete floor is very uneven meaning that laying the studio floor directl
